The Life of Nat Turner
Self-Direction 21st Century Skill
"The Life of Nat Turner" is a history presentation and summary I did for our classes final assessment presentation grade. It was almost entirely a self directional project. It was assigned over fall break, and it was supposed to be done by the day we got back. The teacher only a few requirements. She told us we had to research a slave, and we had to present on it. She left it up to us on how we were going to do that, and in what way we were going t0 present it. Our final requirement was to write a summary of the slave you researched.
I decided that I wanted to do a slide show presentation on the slave "Nat Turner". I picked him because in my opinion he was one of the most interesting slaves. Turner was highly religious, and that's important because he lead a revolution against slave holders because of visions he said he had received. The rebellion is known as the largest slave revolt in American history, and was said to be an influence for a lot of people at the time to become abolitionists. There are lot more interesting details packed into Nat Turners Life that I put in my presentation and summary.
After deciding to do "Nat Turner" I researched about him from a multitude of sources and wrote down all the important details. While setting up my slides, I decided to set them up in chronological order, having each slide be a major part of his life. I then put all my information in the slides and added a few pictures to make it look nicer. After I was done with that, I wrote a summary of his life and why it was influential.
This project was one of my favorite projects because of how it was structured. Us students had no rubric, or clear project outline, which forced us to figure out how we could structure it the best. It was over break, which made it harder for me to get it done. With all the distractions during break, and having no reminders, I had to be self directed to get it done. Overall though, I think it was a great change to a regular project outline, and it helped me get used to get things done on my own from scratch.
