Hawaiian Heroes Project
Interpersonal 21st Century Skill
In English class are semester long project is the Hawaiian Heroes competition. For this we picked an influential member of society during the European exploration of Hawaii. We would work individually and in groups during the course of this project. We had different competitions where we would have two students or groups go up against each other. Whoever had the better work would probably be voted on from the class and they would get a point. At the end of the group stage the people with the most points would move on. After the group stage there were only elimination rounds where if you lost you were out. We are still currently doing the competition but I have done many assignments especially in groups already.
There is a lot of interpersonal skills that come into play with these assignments. The teacher switches up the teams every new round, so I have been in a group with a variety of people. We have worked together to make skits, movies, and more. I have learned about multiple old Hawaiians who have done important things for the islands. This includes my personal Hawaiian Hero, "John Papa 'I'i". He was important to the state and held several government positions making him a valuable citizen. I was able to research him by myself and with group mates so I could experience both ways.
I personally don't like working in groups, but this project was a great way for me to get comfortable with other people so I can work effectively with other people when it is necessary. That's why I think the Hawaiian Hero Competition represents the Interpersonal 21st Century Skill.
