Calculus Exam
Thinking and Problem Solving 21st Century Skills
Description of Work/Assignment:
In the first quarter of my calculus class we were introduced to the idea of derivatives and other concepts that related to them. Later in that quarter we took our first exam that pertained to that subject. It was a 13 question test that had to be finished within 90 minutes, with all work shown.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
I think this exam fits perfectly under the Thinking and Problem Solving 21st Century Skill. Within the description of this skill it directly says it includes “higher order math skills”, and I would think that calculus would fit that description.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
I am very satisfied with the 100% that I achieved on the exam. Even though it is only the first large test of the semester, that doesn’t take away from its difficulty. There were a multitude of tricky questions on the test, and you really had to know your stuff to do well.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
This was my first test for a college level math class, and the difficulty definitely showed that. This was not a test that you could go into without extensive studying, so this was a great opportunity for me to exercise that skill and put it to use.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
The most difficult thing about completing this exam was finishing it on time. I believe I had about 5 minutes remaining before the test ended, so it was a close call.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently?
Even though I got a 100%, if I could do it all again, I would have spent much more time preparing. If I had done this, I feel as if the exam would have been a breeze.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
Throughout my high school career, I have had many exams, but this one was a little different. It felt a little more official, and the stakes seemed higher. This is a good thing though, because it gives me an early look into what a college atmosphere would feel like.
